The time has come to bid farewell to “Year in Rainbow.”
For the past twelve months, gung-ho striptease artist Darlinda Just Darlinda has stuck to a strict dress code—six months of wearing only a single color of the rainbow (plus she had to stage a show based on each one) and six months of adorning herself in all the colors combined.
What a quirky and fabulous challenge!
The “living art project” climaxes this Saturday with a burlesque blowout at NYC’s Zipper Theater, featuring Darlinda and a cavalcade of super-colorful performers.
In an exclusive interview, she elaborated on her fascinating endeavor...
My Comrade: Are you happy to finally be able to wear brown and other earthy colors?
Darlinda Just Darlinda: I don't think brown looks good on me—it makes me sleepy. I am happy to have the option to wear black.
MC: Was this a queer project? Were you referencing the gay flag?
DJD: I am queer, but it wasn’t designed as a queer project. It was designed to challenge people as to what the rainbow means to them. The type of rainbow I referenced was the same as the gay flag with six colors, but that’s just because it fit easily into my project format.
MC: Isn’t it difficult to find rainbow-themed clothing?
DJD: Not if you go vintage, which is how I dress anyways. But it was tough to find clothing that had every color in it, so I had to accessorize with whatever color was missing.
MC: How did people react to your colorful appearance?
DJD: I live in Bed-Stuy and a lot of people would ask me to be a clown at their children's birthday party or would just plain old yell, “Clown!” My outfits also made a lot of people smile, and they would often say that they wished they could wear color, too. I hope I inspired them.
MC: What was your favorite solid color to wear for an entire month?
DJD: I liked all of them except blue, which was boring, I wore jeans and blue shirts and no one noticed! When I began the project, red was my favorite, so it was the first color I wore to make for an easy transition. But now if I had to choose a favorite, it would be purple.
MC: What's your show going to be like this Saturday?
DJD: Big and rainbow! There will be narrated projections from my blog, video from my past events and lots of performers representing different colors and all the shows that I did this past year. It's 365 days all rolled up into 90 minutes!
MC: Did you happen to find any pots of gold this past year?
DJD: Absolutely, people's reactions have been priceless! Friends and people I don't even know have sent me gifts and photos and shared their experiences that they’ve also had with color! I'm happy it's over, but I would do it again!
