The late Dean Johnson, creator of the legendary NYC party Rock ‘N’ Roll Fag Bar, was celebrated at Don Hill’s nightclub on Friday night the way he would have wanted—with a rollicking party.
The entertainment featured both of his bands—Velvet Mafia and Dean and the Weenies—joined by a flurry of guest performers. Also conjuring Dean’s party-hardy spirit were loads of enthusiastic audience members, including Paul Alexander of the dance/electro/pop band The Ones, who supplied us with the following pics.
Machine Dazzle—who’s just as towering as Dean—had people doing double-takes all night by dolling himself up in Johnson’s trademark style.
Clark Render deejayed and performed as one-half of the Dueling Bankheads, who used to frequently host Dean’s long-running musical showcase, Homocorp, at CBGB.
Paul poses with the other glamorous Bankhead, David Ilku.
Here’s Paul with the World Famous *BOB*, who led the crowd in a rousing chorus of “Happy Birthday” to Dean, who turned 47 that very night.
Paul again with Connie Girl (who sang a perfectly deadpan version of one of Dean’s best-known songs, “The Girl From Planet Muff”), DJ Johnny Dynell (sporting a Lil’ Kim shirt) and cutie Patrick.
Why, what a surprise, it's another photo of Paul. Here he poses with Dean’s long-time friend Dee Finley. Not sure who the guy is giving them the strange look…
By golly—it’s Paul! This time he's with nightlife impresario Chi-Chi Valenti, who helped organize the wonderful event. The benefit raised over $3,300 for Sylvia’s Place, which provides homeless LGBT youth with a place to live.
Thank you Paul for having such long arms to take so many photos of yourself! And Happy Birthday, Dean—we miss you!
