Among the fascinating cast of characters in the 1990 documentary Paris Is Burning (about NYC's underground gay ballroom scene) was a young transgender aspiring model who called herself Octavia St. Laurent—from the House of St. Laurent, of course.
Renown for her beauty, the femme queen snatched trophies galore and one was one of the scene's superstars. (Along the way, she added Mizrahi to the end of her name to denote her connection to the House of Mizrahi.)
Here I am with her and Princess Diandra in 1994 for the taping of a TV show.
Sadly, Octavia died ealier this week after a long struggle with cancer.
Paris Is Burning isn't Octavia's only claim to fame—she was also a cabaret singer and a transgender activist—but it was the movie that thrust her into the spotlight and immortalized her forever.
R.I.P. Octavia, star of the silver screen.
