Get ready for a newfangled version of Hans Christian Andersen’s The Nightingale. NYC renaissance dragster Tabboo! (Don’t forget the exclamation point!) has informed My Comrade that she’s adapting the fable, set in Imperial China, into a play. The production opens this fall for a limited run, with perhaps only one special performance.
This marks Tabboo!’s third homage over the past couple of years to classic tales. In 2006, she melded the Wizard of Oz and Little Red Riding Hood, while her recent spring production paid tribute to Pinocchio.
Below: Tabboo! surrounded from left to right by Finokio star Brandon Olson and audience-members Antony and Johanna Constantine.
Nightingale corresponds with an upcoming exhibition of new paintings by Tabboo! The setting for both the art show and the play is the spacious Lower East Side gallery Participant.
The play has not been cast, but Tabboo! says she's definitely considering one of her previous leading ladies, Agosto Machado, whose acting resumé dates back to the late 1960s when she was one of the Warhol crowd.
It’s going to be a Tabboo! kind of fall.
